01
Problem

We wanted to improve the game experience and also add a feature that adds another type of monetization besides Ads.

So, that brings us to some difficult questions would Spades players accept this new mode of multiplayer? Or are they against changing the traditional game mode?

02
Process

Then, to find these answers we've tried some different approaches that wouldn't impact directly the players:

  • First of all, we've done an internal vote with a list of names for these new features, and the result has 3 names to try;
  • This helped us to see how many clicks we would get on the feature and especially how many times in average players come to see again if the Fake Door finally opens the new feature;
  • Then, we've done Benchmarks, Wireframes and Wireframes Flows to see how this feature would work;
  • Prototype playable, and a Usability Test with 10 players, with non-subscribers and subscribers;
  • Improvements with the UT results, and UI Implementation on Unity UI

Solution

The results of all these processes were:

  • An entirely new feature was planned to be launched as a new game mode to not obligate the Multiplayer players to pay to play (as Multiplayer was free in their old builds);
  • A new currency system entirely made for the Bet Mode;
  • New animations for gaining/losing coins, for the new rooms of this mode that looked like a casino room;
  • New illustrations that match with the American player's lifestyle, as the rings for each room, and also bring the show off feeling to it;
  • 3 bet rooms at the total, where the player could show themself and also help the player to match with the best players, as you would need to be good at receiving the coins to achieve the last rooms;
  • We also added Fake Bots, with names and pictures to populate the rooms and make sure players wouldn't take a long time to able to play if the matchmaking was with fewer people at your time, it would also prioritize matching real players;
  • All the screens and sprites were made on Figma exported and Implemented on Unity UI responsively, and all animations were made on Animator of Unity.
